Remaining in Japan
PFree Agent  F
December 4, 2021
Sugano will remain in Japan next season, Jason Coskrey of the Japan Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Sugano was posted prior to the 2021 season but failed to reach a deal with a major-league club despite the fact that he was coming off a season in which he recorded a 1.97 ERA and 0.88 WHIP. He wasn't quite as dominant in 2021, though his 3.19 ERA and 0.99 WHIP were both very strong marks. He'll turn 33 next October, so his opportunity to make the jump to the highest level may have passed him by.

Padres making late push
PFree Agent  F
January 7, 2021
The Padres remain in talks with Sugano on Thursday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The Padres' interest in Sugano was believed to be cooling recently, but the team is in contact with the NPB star with just hours remaining before his deadline to sign. Sugano has a four-year offer from the Yomiuri Giants on the table with opt-out clauses after every season, and he's reportedly leaning toward returning to Japan since he likely won't be able to get his desired contract terms with an MLB club in 2021.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2017
The past few Japanese import pitchers may have failed to make much of a mark, but Sugano's 2.32 career NPB ERA looks a lot more like Masahiro Tanaka (2.30) or Kenta Maeda (2.39) than Shun Yamaguchi (3.35) or even Yusei Kikuchi (2.77). The 31-year-old has established himself as one of the top pitchers in his home country over the course of his eight-year career, riding excellent command (seen in his career 4.9 BB%) and a full repertoire to a pair of Eiji Sawamura Awards, Japan's Cy Young equivalent. While his age means he doesn't have too many peak seasons left, he hasn't shown any signs of slowing down, posting a 1.97 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 24.6 K% in 2020. A repeat of his NPB numbers is too much to ask given the step up in competition, but he looks quite likely to be at minimum a mid-rotation option for a few years, with the potential for something more.
A top pitcher for the Yomiuri Giants, he had a sparkling 189:26 K:BB performance last season.
