Jayden Daniels

23-Year-Old QuarterbackQB
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Drafted second overall in April, Daniels is the expected Week 1 starter in Washington, even if the team holds a perfunctory competition with free-agent acquisition Marcus Mariota. Daniels is an outstanding athlete, but at 6-4, 210, his slim build causes durability concern. But that’s about the only concern. Armed with a quick release, Daniels is accurate all over the field. Unlike others in his draft, his 72.2 completion percentage last season (7th in FBS) was not built on accuracy-inflating short passes -- his average target depth (10.2) and YPA (11.7) both led the nation. Daniels has a strong arm and good velocity, and though neither is elite he’s an excellent deep-ball thrower. He operates well in the pocket but can also play on the run, and it’s that dual-threat ability that is intriguing both for Washington and fantasy owners. Daniels’ speed and burst make him a dangerous runner -- he rushed for more than 2,000 yards and 21 TDs the last two years. He at times holds the ball longer than necessary, resulting in sacks, but that’s something new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury can hone. The Commanders have quality targets in RB Austin Ekeler, WR Terry McLaurin, WR Jahan Dotson and TE Zach Ertz and added sure-handed WR Luke McCaffrey in the third round of the draft. Daniels, who’s noted for a high football IQ, seems to fit well in Kingsbury’s scheme, but if he needs time to figure out the passing game, his rushing ability should sustain his fantasy value. Picked second overall by Washington
QBWashington Commanders
April 25, 2024
The Commanders selected Daniels in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, second overall.
ANALYSIS
Daniels (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) was a productive three-year starter at Arizona State before transferring to LSU in 2022. Although his first year with the Tigers featured only modest production (2,913 yards and 17 touchdowns passing in 14 games), Daniels' passing numbers went off the chart in his second season with LSU in 2023. The improved numbers brought a Heisman Trophy with them, as Daniels threw for 3,812 yards (11.7 YPA), 40 touchdowns and just four interceptions in 12 games while running for 1,134 yards (8.4 YPC) and 10 touchdowns. Daniels lacks throwing velocity and might be a little slight to get away with running quite as much at the pro level, but his rushing ability is uniquely dangerous on any given play and Daniels showed an effective deep ball throughout his college career. It remains to be seen what kind of offense new coordinator Kliff Kingsbury runs with Washington, but if the team were to emulate the Air Raid offense from Kingsbury's Arizona days then there could be substantial pass attempt and rush attempt volume both for Daniels. Elite rushing production can bring substantial fantasy upside for a quarterback, so Daniels' fantasy value could prove significant even if he has any trouble adjusting to the NFL as a passer.

Draws comp to Lamar
QBFree Agent
April 22, 2024
Daniels was described by one NFL head coach as "Lamar [Jackson] 2.0", Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
"If you pick Daniels, you're getting Lamar 2.0, but he's further along as a passer than Lamar was when he came out," the unnamed coach said. That's high praise for the LSU quarterback considering that Jackson is a two-time NFL MVP, but after winning the Heisman Trophy in 2023, Daniels would appear to have the talent to back up that comparison. He's one of the favorites to be taken second overall in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Commanders, with the Bears seemingly locked in on USC's Caleb Williams with the first overall pick.
